Here is a list of things for your primary support person to do BEFORE you go into labor. This helps them and you be more prepared and connected! List is not exhaustive but can be used as a good jumping off point and conversation starter.

  • Learn about the stages of labor

  • Indicators that can help you determine where in labor she is and how to support

  • Work through any fears you may have surrounding birth

  • Take a childbirth education class together (online or in-person)

  • Go to OB / midwife appointments with her

    • Even just one if it is possible will mean a lot

  • Book her a prenatal massage and/or a prenatal chiropractic visit.

  • Try different labor positions, comfort measures, & coping techniques ahead of time

  • Practice breathing exercises together

  • Plan for who will watch your other children (if you have them) in labor and birth

  • Learn about postpartum recovery, support, & nourishment

    • Help make freezer meals and have food ready for postpartum (think about easy food to have ready for older children as well)

  • Learn about newborn care, feeding, & sleeping

    • Discuss with your partner roles you each will play in these areas.

  • Pack the hospital bags (You need one too!)

    • Snacks, drinks, phone chargers, change of clothes, socks, pillows, blankets.

    • Even if planning a homebirth, having a bag packed is a good idea

  • Install the car seat correctly

  • Prepare the car for a ride to the hospital (even if planning a homebirth)

  • Print a few copies of the birth plan...and READ IT! :)

    • Know her preferences and be ready to stand up for them!

  • Have quick food & drinks ready for labor (for both you and your partner)

  • Plan for when you will call the provider / head to the hospital or birth center

    • Contractions are 4-5 minutes apart

    • Contractions last about 1 minute each

    • This pattern lasts for at least 1 hour

  • Get answers to your questions about birth from a trusted source

  • Know her preferences and be ready to stand up for them!
